Welcome to the Governor Information Page
Our Governors are very proud of Castle Cary Primary School and work hard to promote the welfare and ethos of the school.
The purpose of governance is to provide confident, strategic leadership of the school and to create robust accountability, oversight and assurance for educational and financial performance. In essence, this means the Governing Board is responsible for the standard of education the school provides. There are particular statutory responsibilities in relation to, for example, attendance and behaviour, curriculum, provision for children with special educational needs, premises, staffing, finance and complaints.
Governors work at the strategic level, the day-to-day management of the school is the responsibility of the Headteacher, who reports to the Governing Board. All our Governors are volunteers with a wide range of complementary skills which are harnessed to benefit the school.
We have 11 Governors in total: 4 are parents, 1 is nominated by the Local Authority, 2 are staff members (including the Headteacher) and 4 co-opted Governors appointed by the Governing Board. The term of office is four years. Individuals are appointed on the basis of their ability to contribute to the work of the Governing Board and come from a wide range of backgrounds, including business and education.
The Chair and Vice-Chair are appointed annually via a vote amongst the Governing Board. The Governing Board appoints a Clerk, which is an independent paid role, whose job it is to arrange, administrate and record all meetings and advise on areas of protocol and procedure that need to be adhered to.
We have three full Governing Board meetings a year at which all Governors are expected to attend. In addition there are three main committees dealing with Learning & Achievement, Personnel & Well-Being and Resources (Finance, Premises and Health & Safety). Each of these committees meet termly.
Our Governors take an active part in the school throughout the year and all have at least one specific area of responsibility which links them with members of staff. We spend time understanding the learning that happens in the classroom, appoint new members of staff, approve a wide range of policies, agree a budget and much more.
If you would like to see the minutes of our Governing Board meetings please request a copy from the school office.
To be a governor is an important and demanding role but very rewarding. We are deeply committed to the success and well-being of the children at Castle Cary Primary School. If you would like to find out more or are interested in joining us when there is a vacancy, please get in touch.
The Chair of Governors at Castle Cary Primary School for the 2021/22 academic year is Mr Keith Bush.
